Transylvania County, known as the Land of Waterfalls, is a rural community in Western North Carolina with over 40% of the land being publicly owned and protected. It consists of several interesting communities, each with its own special personality:
The City of Brevard is the largest community with a population of 7,700. The city is governed by a mayor and city council. It includes a happening downtown, access to Pisgah National Forest, Brevard College, the Brevard Music Center, cultural destinations like Transylvania Heritage Museum and Silvermont, a vibrant art scene, three breweries….and much more.
The town of Rosman sits on the eastern boundary of Pisgah National Forest and is right at the headwaters of the French Broad River, the third oldest river in the world. With a population of approximately 600 and a town center that includes the local high school and the flow of the French Broad River in Champion Park, this community is full of small-town charm. Rosman is governed by a mayor and a board of aldermen.
Several unincorporated communities comprise a large part of Transylvania County.
Cedar Mountain is in the southern part of the county, near the entrance to DuPont State Recreational Forest. It features nice mountain countryside, an emerging business community, a private residential community, and more.
Pisgah Forest is adjacent to the entrance to Pisgah National Forest, which includes a collection of great businesses surrounding the Hwy 276/64/280 intersection. Located on the west end of the county it is convenient to Hendersonville, Mills River, and the Asheville Regional Airport, and includes a handful of residential communities.
Balsam Grove is north of Rosman, within Pisgah National Forest and Nantahala National Forest. This beautiful and remote setting includes a minimal number of homes and businesses.
The Lake Toxaway and Sapphire communities are in the western part of the county, with Sapphire transitioning to Jackson County. They include warm, rural communities with rich heritage, as well as beautiful private communities, including one on North Carolina’s largest private lake. Both are close to Gorges State Park.
Penrose is a small community on the eastern part of Transylvania, bordering Henderson County. It features beautiful countryside and is conveniently located roughly ten minutes from both Pisgah Forest and Dupont State Recreational Forest.
